Pitcher of peonies

All hung at Childwickbury. I’ll be up with the lark in the morning and heading back down the M1 with my paints to demonstrate. Fridays is great as there’s always a visit from some primary school children who ask the most hilarious questions – can’t wait to hear what tomorrows will be. I’m squeezing every last drop out of the peony season and have some in the fridge to take with me tomorrow but think the petals will probably all drop off en route. Cherries packed as back-up!

Pink peonies again

I’m very sad that we’ve come to the end of peony season but at the same time, it will be nice to move on. I’m a bit peonied-out. Today is packing up for Childwickbury day which is a bit of a mission……getting it all in the car. If I don’t get a chance to blog tomorrow when I’m setting up, have a great weekend and hope to see some of you there.

Peony study

A quicky today as I’m on babysitting duty this afternoon. My young charge from next door is currently sorting out my button jar. In fact, it’s my mother’s button jar that I used to sort out happily of an afternoon back in the day. Funny how little things capture small imaginations. I can hear her singing in the kitchen as I type – little does she know that her sorting will all be in vain as I’ll stick them back in the jar when she’s gone ready for her next visit so she can do it all over again, she’ll be none the wiser.

Watermelon

I painted this during the hot spell last week. As you can see, I couldn’t resist the refreshing juices on a steamy day. I’m spending this week gearing up and packing for Childwickbury at the end of the week and over the weekend. Love this festival, such happy vibes, chummy artists and great music and food without having to spend hours looking for your pals if you have to dash off to the loo like at Glastonbury. Ok, so Ed Sheeran won’t be there but apart from that, what’s not to like?

Figs

A little break from my beloved peonies today………to my beloved figs. I love painting both so at this time of year it’s always a fight. Anyway, I’m setting up to do a bigger one of these figs as they are so gorgeous. I may be tempted to eat them, that’s always the trouble.
Have a lovely weekend. A quick reminder that next weekend, I’ll be demonstrating and selling work at the fabulous Childwickbury Arts Festival near Harpenden. If you’re going, please stop by and say hello. It’s a great family day out and I’m really looking forward to all the fabulous food there for one thing!!

White peonies 2

Phew, my studio is like a furnace so I decamped to the kitchen to paint these and made use of the skylight. I really like the light coming from above so I may have to make a permanent move and send the family to live in the studio.

White roses 2

I know we’re not allowed to complain but frankly, it’s pretty hard painting things that die in front of your very eyes, very quickly! I have been struggling with a white peony this morning, which decided to drop one side of its petals completely so I’m having to improvise. Anyway, I did these before the heatwave. Off to sit on the sunlounger (in the shade) while I eat my lunch.

Demo piece flowers

Ok, I am officially melting. It’s not funny anymore even though my studio is the coolest place……it’s still hot. I was going to go out and buy a fan but suspect there will have been a rush on them. Here’s another one I forgot, a quick demo from our last flower painting workshop. Next one September!

Demo piece

I forgot to post yesterday as I was so stuck into the peonies! Anyway, more of them later, once they’re dry. Before that, here’s a quick demo study I did at my recent workshops on the subject of which……….next ones are 11th and 12th September, still life and flower painting respectively and sometime in August I aim to run a plein-air workshop here near Towcester. Do email me if interested.
