Blue hydrangeas

So, I’m back from a protracted absence from blogging due to all sorts of things, not least of which was a nasty attack of artist’s block.  It happens from time to time and I needed that break.  More on that later.

My most urgent piece of news is that I have a few spaces left on my workshops on either September 12th or 13th.  For more details, see here and to register please email me directly.  It’s a fun day of painting in which we learn about painting alla prima and ending up with a ”daily painting”.

For today, here’s a jug of blue hydrangeas from Cornwall.  The ones in my garden are always pink and then they turn that lovely rusty red which is happening right now………….they’ll be in the studio soon!

I think the lilac is beginning to go over now, that is all the tight, dark buds have bloomed and it’s a lighter shade all over. I managed this one before it happened though.
Have a great weekend, whatever the weather brings.

Jug, pomegranate and figs

Just time to blog before I nip off and practise my Gay Gordons…….Burn’s night looms. I did this one before I left the UK and can’t believe I paid over £1 for a pomegranate! They’re about 10p each here. Guess what I’ll be painting next week?

Jug and bowl

Aargh, rain. Well that’s put an end to my Plein-air painting plan. I’m only glad that my studio has an entire wall of north-facing window, it’s really murky out there. No blogs next week as I’m on a portrait workshop. Actually, if you can bear it, and my technology doesn’t fail, I could post a day-by-day update. This little bowl made it’s way to the front of my cupboard so I felt obliged to listen to it and put it in a painting.

I started off painting a still life this morning but couldn’t settle.  After my day painting on Sunday with Roy Connelly, I wanted to get outside and ended the day painting “my boys” the steers ( or are they bullocks? Never sure of the correct term)in the field behind my garden. Not really finished so maybe another day for  that one.  Anyway, take a look at Roy’s great work at royconnelly.com.  His workshop is really worth joining.  So, in the meantime, here’s one i’ve just finished for an upcoming exhibition. I meant to thank all those of  you who visited me in my “open studio” over the past two weeks.  It was great meeting you and thanks for making the trip…….some of you a long one!  Exciting news tomorrow……..

After a rather hectic few days it’s nice to get back behind the easel.  A two-day trip to Felixstowe to deliver paintings and attend the PV was tiring but fun.  I met other past students of my old art school,  Ipswich School of Art and was amazed to hear it is now a council-run gallery and has moved from its splendid location.  We spent a happy couple of hours reminiscing about tutors, students and the pub across the road!  Sunday was spent in the driving rain and howling winds on the side of a hockey pitch watching daughter play in tournament – I think I’ve just about dried out and warmed up.  Parental love is a powerful drug!
