Sweet Williams

I was in the MIN shop yesterday painting in the window. It was good fun and I got lots of thumbs up from passersby. It was lovely to meet other Northants artist including the incredibly talented Sam Wadsworth.. Check out his website…..great portraits and landscapes. Here are the sweet Williams I painted in the shop. Off to London all next week so no posting. I will be at the Landmark Art Fair in Teddington next weekend so if you’re nearby pop in. If you’d like private view tickets (Friday evening) or 2 for 1 tickets for Saturday or Sunday, email me and I will leave them on the door. See you in a week when I will have lots of paintings to show you!

MIN shop

Bluebells 2

Phew! Back from Patchings and just about unpacked and sorted…..kind of. It was a lot of fun, I met loads of lovely people including some artists I’d long admired and even got some sunshine to boot, though not a lot! So anyway, welcome, welcome to all those lovely new subscribers, I hope you enjoy my ramblings and more importantly my daily paintings. Speaking of which, I’m not quite sure just how daily they’ll be in the next weeks as I have another show coming up that I must prepare for. Firstly, if you are in my area, I am going to be painting in the window of the Made in Northamptonshire shop in St. Gilles st, Northampton on Thursday morning. If you’re passing give me a wave or better still, come in and say hello. I will no doubt feel a complete lemon or maybe like one of those ladies in Amsterdam. Don’t think I’ll wear the suspenders though! Here’s one I made earlier as I haven’t managed to get to the easel today yet.

A jar of lilac

What a lovely day. Sadly, I have been too busy to be outside but maybe next week, unless it rains! Off to Nottingham tomorrow so no posts until next week. Enjoy the sun. My lilac tree was in full bloom yesterday so I picked an armful and stuck it in this large jar.

Scorchio!  Not a moment too soon.  Bubba is sunbathing by the back door  and Floss is revising in the sunshine at last.  Apple blossom on it’s last legs now, bumper crop this year methinks.

Apple blossom bough

The sun is out yeehah! I have been busy getting things together for Patchings Arts Festival next weekend in Nottinghamshire. I hope this weather remains settled because I am in a marquee right next to the entrance with paintings balanced precariously on easels. A gust of wind would not be helpful. Another go at the apple blossom.

Apple blossom in hyacinth jar

I have had quite enough of this rain. I have been inspired by my favourite apple tree which is full I’d blossom. I think the apples which hopefully will follow might just break a branch or two. I’ve never seen so much blossom.

Colman’s jar

Sometimes the onslaught of spring flowers is just too much and I have to get back to my old friends from the larder for a bit of “dead life”. The rain is relentless here and it’s half-term of course. I seem to remember revising for my o’levels on the beach in a heat wave. Poor Floss, I think I’d better get some chocolate in to compensate.

Magnolia and bowl

Guess what. More magnolia. Today’s Wednesday tip is, if you are unsure of your tonal values, it pays to do a quick under painting first with turps-diluted burnt sienna in various strengths. Then you can work up the painting on top.

Black magnolia

Another one snaffled from a friend’s garden. Last night I went to see Birdsong at the theatre…….excellent. It’s on tour so if you get a chance, I recommend it. I’ve been prepping boards this morning which is quite time-consuming, four coats each!  All this is because, I had ear-marked today to embark on my foray into plein-air painting………..i.e. going out and painting some landscapes to make a change from Magnolias.   However, the weather was against me.  Note to self, watch the weather forecast.

You were warned, we have magnolias up the wazoo this week. I will have some paintings at Spirit of Summer at Olympia this week on Charlotte Supple Interior’s stall. Well worth a visit as she always has lovely things and is a very talented interior designer.
