Roses

Well, I had a lovely time in Italy and feeling rested and raring to go. Whilst I unruffle my feathers, here’s one I made earlier. It will be part of the exhibition The Coton Manor Year I’m holding at 78 Derngate, Northampton in February which will feature year-round plein air and still life from that most marvellous garden.

Boscobel

I was hoping to revisit Coton Manor today but woke to fog………I mean, August? Seriously? I thought I’d cling on to the summer by painting this lovely Boscobel rose which has finally flowered in my beds.

White roses 2

I know we’re not allowed to complain but frankly, it’s pretty hard painting things that die in front of your very eyes, very quickly! I have been struggling with a white peony this morning, which decided to drop one side of its petals completely so I’m having to improvise. Anyway, I did these before the heatwave. Off to sit on the sunlounger (in the shade) while I eat my lunch.

White roses

I’m still on those frustrating whites but just by way of a change, some roses this time. I think it’s called Madame Alfred Carrierre but I could be wrong. Anyway, its very abundant and grows best in my neighbour’s garden where it blooms profusely and I’m apt to nip in on the quiet and snaffle some…….fortunately, she’s very understanding.

Demo piece 3

Here’s the last demo piece from recent workshops.  It was done realllllly quickly as I had another piece on the go for the still-lifers.  We like to cater!  So, anyway, it was the last of the roses which were a challenge but the students did amazingly well.

This weekend, I will be at the private view at Patchings of the mixed artists exhibition which was part of the prize I won there last year.  I also have work at the Cambridge Affordable Art Fair on this weekend where I’ll be represented by Art Salon so if you’re near either and you’d like a free or two for one ticket – let me know.

I managed this one before everything in the garden got flattened by rain and strangled by rampant bindweed.  It was done as a step-by-step demo for an article in The Artist due out in the winter so I’ll let you know when it’s out. It sold at the weekend.

Roses and peonies 2

This is the sister painting to yesterday’s, also painted as a demo at Childwickbury.  After that, I got a bit peonied-out and went to paint the ice-cream van instead.  It seemed only natural to try their goods and I have to admit the plum and gin was pretty good!  Didn’t bode well for the rest of the painting sadly.

Roses and peonies

I did this one as a demo at Childwickbury and brought it home wet. It didn’t hang around long, a studio visitor just took it home to her lovely house – she only popped in for some cards!
In the meantime, I’ve been working on a larger painting of Cornishware and eggshells today and I keep looking at the vertiginous ironing pile……….naaaaah – painting.

Cream Roses

I’m totally fed-up with this rain now – everything’s being battered and I’m desperate to go and paint outside. I did these cream roses before the next pumelling – pilfered from a friend’s garden while they’re away on holiday – with permission, promise!
Anyway, it’s Childwickbury Arts Fair this weekend so hoping to see some of you there. Don’t worry about the weather it’s mostly in marquees and there’s always lots to do and see – all artists demonstrating. Loads of good music and scrumptious food. Hope to blog but don’t hold your breath……..always completely whacked when I get home each evening.

Roses

Some roses that I’d painted for someone…….they lasted an extra day so I made the most of them. There are things poking through in the flower-beds here and I’ve spotted some sweetpea shoots growing up the fencing on the tennis courts……shouldn’t be long now. In the meantime, it’ll be oranges and pomegranates next week as they are in abundance!
